That Badu: Genetics Worthy of the Name

Some strains are bold and funky; others delicate and dreamy. But That Badu by Cookies is in a league of its own—this vibrant, euphoric hybrid—grown by Mad Cow Genetics—stuns with jewel-toned purple buds. It delivers an experience as smooth as it is uplifting, making it one of the rare few worthy of carrying Grammy-winning Erykah Badu’s name.

Erykah Badu herself describes the strain best: “It’s really nice and natural, sort of like a ballad. It just makes you move light, and it kind of gets you through your day, and you’re not zooted.”

Like all cannabis strains, That Badu is heavily influenced by its lineage, crafted from the powerhouse genetics of Jet Fuel Gelato x Lemonchello

Jet Fuel Gelato

Focused, arousing, and uplifting, this high-THC sativa-leaning hybrid is reported by many of its fans to knock out stress, anxiety, and depression. Gassy, lemony, floral, and loud, Jet Fuel Gelato may just be the fuel you need to kick your day into overdrive.

Lemonchello

Crisp, lemon-scented, and mellow, this balanced hybrid is a cross between The Original Lemonnade and the popular Cherry Pie. But mellow doesn’t mean out of action: With a tendency to impart chattiness and giggles in many partakers, Lemonchello may deliver a zingy burst of energy balanced by a relaxing, fruit-scented buzz—effects that are very similar to That Badu.

Is That Badu Indica or Sativa?

Though we lean on the terms indica and sativa to help our customers better understand and predict the general effects of various strains, the terminology is a bit more nuanced. While some argue these terms are no longer technically accurate, they are still a useful way to describe how different strains will feel.

Indicas—like the classic “Kush” strains—are associated with a relaxing “body high,” while sativas tend to impart energizing, cerebrally stimulating effects such as a creative or focused rush.

So, where does That Badu fall? It’s a sativa-leaning hybrid that blends the best of both worlds but leans into its uplifting side. Many fans find its sativa genetics take the lead, delivering a focused yet relaxed energy.

How Potent Is That Badu?

If there’s one key factor in predicting a strain’s effects, it’s THC content. As the primary cannabinoid—and the one most associated with the plant’s euphoric “high”—THC plays the biggest role in a strain’s potency and impact.

Clocking in at an average of 25% THC, That Badu isn’t messing around. If you’re new to cannabis or sensitive to high-THC strains, consider this a powerhouse worth approaching with both curiosity and respect.

Out of the Bag: Appearance, Flavor, and Aroma

That Badu is a true showstopper. Its buds dazzle with deep purple, threaded with jeweled-toned accents and coated in a thick layer of glistening trichomes—the plant’s tiny resin glands responsible for the strain’s rich cannabinoid and terpene profile.

But it’s the aroma and flavor where That Badu truly shines. Some describe notes of Champagne and candied citrus fruit, while others pick up lush hints of melon and fresh lemon balm. Those captivating scents come from the strain’s terpenes, the fragrant oils that shape both its sensory experience and potential effects. The three most dominant include:

  • Linalool: Strongly associated with the herb lavender, linalool is cherished by many for its naturally calming effects. Some clinical studies suggest that—like limonene—linalool may impart broadly anti-depressant effects.

Combine these aromatic terpenes, and you get a sensory masterpiece—That Badu is as flavorful as it is potent. Whether you’re drawn to its bold aroma, complex taste, or uplifting effects, That Badu is a cultivar that truly stands out from the crowd.

That Badu Strain Effects

Many connoisseurs of That Badu point to its sativa dominant side as being the best representation of its power. Referencing her work as a doula, Erykah Badu once said in an interview: “The herb is for everybody, but we had women in mind. [I’m] an advocate who uses the plant as medicine in my ritual work, my spiritual work, my art, my creativity. I also use it for my birth mothers as a doula.”

That Badu Strain Effects

Judging from recent reviews, the public agrees. In the words of one fan: “Euphoria doesn’t even begin to explain the feel from this strain. Full-body tingles, lights, and sounds are trippy. Exactly what I would imagine Erykah Badu’s vibes to be. Amazing hybrid blend to be creative or just chill. I finally found my favorite flower!”

Growing That Badu: Tips and Tricks

That Badu is a new strain, so grow reports are only just starting to roll in. That said, all indications are that the strain is fairly easy to cultivate and grows well inside or out.

Flowering time is relatively short, at 8 to 9 weeks. If you’re cultivating outdoors, you should plan on harvesting around early October, depending on local conditions. Though it’s a relatively compact plant, it can kick out some serious yields. Managed carefully, you can expect an average harvest of 550 grams / M2 inside, with up to 700 grams / plant outside.
